Bmx Cycling Major Categories

  • Cross-Country (XC) is the most popular form of mountain biking. A typical XC bike weighs around 9-13 kilos (20-30 lbs), and has 0-125 millimeters (0-5 inches) of suspension travel front and sometimes rear.
  • All-mountain (AM) bike category typically provides 125-180 millimeters (5-7 inches) of rear and front suspension travel and stronger components than XC model.
  • Downhill (DH) is, in the most general sense, riding mountain bikes downhill. Downhill bikes now weigh around 16-20 kilos (35-45 lbs), while professional downhill mountain bikes can weigh as little as 15 kilos (33 lbs), fully equipped with custom carbon fibre parts, air suspension, tubeless tires and more. Downhill frames get anywhere from 170-250 millimeters (7 to 10 inches) of travel and are usually mounted with a 200 millimeter (8 inch) travel dual-crown fork.
  • Four-cross/Dual Slalom (4X) is a sport in which riders compete either on separate tracks, as in Dual Slalom, or on a short slalom track, as in 4X. However, some riders, such as Cedric Garcia, still do 4X and DH, although that is becoming more rare as 4X takes on its own identity.
  • Dirt Jumping (DJ) is one of the names given to the practice of riding bikes over shaped mounds of dirt or soil and becoming airborne. The idea is that after riding over the 'take off' the rider will become airborne, and aim to land on the 'landing'. Dirt jumping can be done on almost anything but the bikes are generally smaller and more maneuverable hardtails so that tricks .
  • Trials riding consists of hopping and jumping bikes over obstacles. Trials bikes look almost nothing like mountain bikes. They use either 20", 24" or 26" wheels and have very small, low frames, some types without a saddle.
  • Urban/Street is essentially the same as urban BMX . The bikes are the same as those used for Dirt Jumping, having 24" or 26" wheels. Also, they are very light, many in the range of 25-30 lbs, and are typically hardtails with between 0-100 millimeters of front suspension
  • Mountain Bike Touring is long distance touring on dirt roads and single track with a mountain bike.. Bike manufacturers like Salsa have even developed MTB touring bikes like the Fargo model. Mixed Terrain Cycle-Touring or rough riding is a form of mountain bike touring but involves cycling over a variety of surfaces and topography on a single route, with a single bicycle.

BMX cycling discipline

Freestyle BMX riders participate in many well-established disciplines. As in the other kinds of freestyle riding, there are no specific rules; style/aesthetics, skills, and creativity are stressed. Street riders tend to have no brakes. If they do, it is mostly straight cable,. Usually they have front and back pegs at one side of the bike. They also have a ability to ride without flanges on their grips.

Park
Skate parks are used by BMX riders,. Skate parks themselves can be made of wood, concrete or metal. Styles of riding will depend on the style of the parks. Wood is more suited to a flowing style, with riders searching for gaps and aiming to air higher from the coping. Concrete parks usually tend to contain bowls and pools. However, it is not unusual for riders to merge the two styles in either type of park

BMX Race Bikes

BMX race bikes are simple, strong, and light. They have only one gear, and only one brake (on the rear wheel). There is no suspension (it would soak up all your speed!). Frames are usually made from aluminium, but you will also see chromium-molybdenum steel (“cromoly”), and titanium. Carbon-fibre components including forks, handlebars, cranks, and seatposts are becoming increasingly common. Frames and components come in a wide range of sizes to suit all ages and sizes of rider.

There are two “classes” of BMX race bike:

20 inch BMX:

This is the “standard” BMX bike – the 20 inch refers to the diameter of the wheels. They are agile and quick-steering, and are raced by all ages of riders – race classes for 20 inch range from “6 and under” to “30+”.

 Cruiser BMX:

These have 24 inch diameter wheels. They are less agile, but more stable, than 20 inch bikes and are often favoured by physically larger riders or those from a mountain bike background (the standard mountain bike wheel is 26 inch diameter, so a cruiser feels like an agile mountain bike). Cruiser race classes range from “12 and under” to “40+”.

The two classes of bike do not usually race each other - the exceptions to this are “Open” race classes held at some of the larger race meetings, and “Formula” racing (such as that run by the East Anglia region for its winter race series) which groups riders solely into age bands regardless of bike class. Some racers compete in both 20 inch and cruiser classes – so they take two bikes to race meetings, and they need the fitness to do twice as much racing on the day!

Olympics Cycling 2012 - BMX

Olympics cycling BMX 2012, will be held on a short outdoor track, with the riders starting on an 8m-high ramp across the way build up with jumps, bumps and tightly banked corners. Following individual time trial seeding rounds, eight riders compete in heats, with each race lasting around 40 seconds.
BMX bikes have only one gear and one brake. Most racing riders use wheels that are 20 inches in diameter, roughly two-thirds the size of wheels used on a standard road bike. Bikes need to be strong enough to endure the wear and tear from the jarring landings after jumps, yet light enough to remain fast and competitive. The men's and women's events at London 2012 will both start with a seeding phase: each rider runs the track once to determine the seedings, which ensures that the fastest riders don’t meet before the final. The men’s event continues with the quarter-finals, which are held over five races with groups of eight riders.

Points are awarded according to places, and the top two riders from the first three races in each quarter-final qualify for the semi-finals. The groups (now six riders in each) race twice more, and the top two riders from each group of six transfer to the semi-finals. From here, the semi-finals in both the men’s and women’s events follow a three-run format: the top four riders from each semi-final advance to the final run, when the medals are decided.
